Concept Development
The Blindfold Metaphor
The initial idea was inspired by the Allegory of the Cave and the film Bird Box. The sketch portrayed a person wearing a blindfold, deliberately refusing to look at the pollution behind them. Printed on the blindfold was a beautiful landscape — symbolising the illusion people choose to see instead of environmental destruction. The concept visually contrasts denial and reality.

Photoshoot
Capturing the Human Element
To strengthen the emotional impact, I photographed a model wearing a blindfold. Using real imagery instead of illustration grounded the concept in reality and made the metaphor more immediate and relatable.

Monochrome Reality
Stripping Away Comfort
In this iteration, I edited the image to black and white and refined details such as the hand positioning. The removal of colour created a harsh, dull atmosphere — reinforcing the seriousness of environmental consequences and contrasting the illusion of beauty presented by the blindfold.

Environmental Context
Confronting the Landscape
I introduced a photograph of a landfill site in Kyrgyzstan, a place I personally visited. Rather than focusing solely on shock value, the composition highlights the scale of human impact on natural landscapes — showing how environmental systems are altered by waste accumulation and neglect.

The Illusion of Beauty
The Other Side of Kyrgyzstan
In contrast, I integrated vibrant imagery of Kyrgyzstan’s mountainous landscapes. This represents the idealised image many people associate with the country — pristine, untouched nature. The juxtaposition exposes the gap between perception and reality.

Final Outcome
Rough Typography, Direct Message
For the final design, I used a rough, imperfect typeface to echo the urgency and discomfort of the topic. The slogan “Open Your Eyes” directly calls on viewers to confront environmental truth instead of hiding behind comforting illusions — transforming the poster from a visual statement into a call for awareness and action.
